The very first event in the boarding each year is the Ice-Breaker Games. It is a fun way of getting to know each other. As is customary, the boarding parents ran the stations, 4 in all. We had ‘Creative Pyramids’, ‘Pass the ball’ Challenge, ‘Word Power, and ‘Ping Pong Tic, Tac, Toe’. Four very different games that tested the ability of the teams to organize themselves and coordinate their efforts to make the best of the given conditions. This year, students treated us to wonderful ‘crumbling’ pyramids, although a few did sustain the 10 seconds required and did reach a reasonable height. It was unbelievable to realize the number of ‘three letter’ and ‘four-letter’ words the teams came up with in the word power game, those writing them on the boards could not keep pace with the machine-gun like rate of production. The Ping Pong game proved the most challenging as teams struggled to land table tennis balls in 3 consecutive glasses. In the ‘pass the ball’ game, students came to realize that when ‘under fire’ from the opposite team, even the simple passing of a basketball can be challenging… and a litlle frightful too!
The 6 teams of Bulls, Foxes, Tuskers, Tigers, Lions and Rhinos gave their all. Eventually all assembled for the ‘four corner’ challenge. When the action part of the competition was over, we all went for dinner and rest while some dedicated team members put together the ‘movie’ of their team. Then it was time for screening. In an ‘electric’ atmosphere all the participants gathered in the boarding hall and we watched the videos of each team. ‘Lions’ won this event with a very ‘tech’ movie that drew a lot of applause. It was the end of the Ice-Breaker Games for this year. I think we all had a good time and it was a fitting way of ending the first week of school.
